Standard Operating Procedure for Maintenance of Hazardous Material Storage Cabinets

1) Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to ensure that hazardous material storage cabinets are maintained in good condition to safely store hazardous chemicals, prevent spills, leaks, or contamination, and comply with safety regulations.

2) Scope

This SOP applies to all hazardous material storage cabinets in laboratories, warehouses, and production facilities where chemicals, flammable substances, and other hazardous materials are stored.

3) Responsibilities

  • Operators: Perform routine checks and ensure cabinets are used as per guidelines.
  • Maintenance Personnel: Conduct periodic maintenance, repair, and replacement of storage cabinets.
  • Supervisors: Verify maintenance schedules and documentation are followed.
  • Safety Officers: Oversee inspections, identify hazards, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

4) Procedure

4.1 Types of Hazardous Material Storage Cabinets

Identify storage cabinets based on their purpose and the materials stored:

  1. Flammable Storage Cabinets: Designed for flammable and combustible chemicals.
  2. Corrosive Storage Cabinets: Designed to store acids, bases, and other corrosive materials.
  3. Toxic Storage Cabinets: Used for storing toxic and hazardous substances.
  4. General Chemical Cabinets: For chemicals that do not require specific fire or corrosion protection.

4.2 Routine Inspection and Preventive Maintenance

Regular inspections and preventive maintenance must be carried out to ensure the integrity and functionality of hazardous material storage cabinets.

    1. Check the exterior for visible damage, rust, or corrosion.
    2. Verify that all labels and hazard signs (e.g., flammable, corrosive) are intact and legible.
    3. Ensure cabinet doors are closing properly and latching securely.
    4. Inspect for spills, leaks, or residues inside the cabinet and clean immediately if necessary.
    5. Confirm ventilation openings (if applicable) are not blocked.

    1. Check structural integrity, including hinges, door seals, and locks.
    2. Inspect for corrosion on shelves, surfaces, and containment trays.
    3. Test ventilation systems in cabinets with exhaust connections.
    4. Verify that secondary containment trays are free of cracks and damage.
    5. Clean the entire cabinet interior and exterior using appropriate cleaning agents compatible with stored materials.
  • 4.3 Cleaning and Spill Management

    1. Cabinet Cleaning:
      1. Remove all chemicals from the cabinet before cleaning.
      2. Use compatible cleaning agents to clean the shelves, walls, and floor of the cabinet.
      3. Wipe surfaces dry and allow ventilation to clear any vapors before restocking materials.

        • Wear appropriate PPE (e.g., gloves, goggles, masks).
        • Use absorbent materials to clean the spill immediately.

    4.4 Repairs and Replacement

      1. Repair minor damages such as loose hinges, damaged locks, or worn-out labels promptly.

      2. Replace cabinets that are extensively corroded or damaged beyond repair.

    1. Documentation:
      1. Maintain maintenance records for all hazardous material storage cabinets.
      2. Use the Inspection and Maintenance Log (Annexure 2) to document:
        • Date of inspection
        • Findings and corrective actions
        • Personnel performing the inspection
