Standard Operating Procedure for Maintenance of Safety Showers and Eyewash Stations

1) Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to establish the procedures for the maintenance and testing of safety showers and eyewash stations to ensure their functionality and readiness for emergency use in pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities.

2) Scope

This SOP applies to all safety showers and eyewash stations installed in pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, including those used for chemical handling areas and laboratories.

3) Responsibilities

The Facility Management Department is responsible for implementing and adhering to this SOP. The Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing compliance and ensuring proper maintenance of safety showers and eyewash stations.

4) Procedure

  1. Weekly Testing
    1. Perform weekly activation tests on safety showers and eyewash stations.
    2. Verify water flow, pressure, and temperature meet regulatory requirements.
    3. Flush systems to remove sediment buildup and ensure clear water flow.
  2. Monthly Inspection
    1. Conduct monthly visual inspections of safety shower and eyewash station components.
    2. Check for leaks, corrosion, and proper signage.
    3. Inspect accessibility and clearance around equipment.
  3. Annual Maintenance
    1. Perform annual maintenance according to manufacturer guidelines and regulatory requirements.
    2. Service valves, nozzles, and plumbing connections.
    3. Replace worn-out parts and components as necessary.
  4. Emergency Procedures
    1. Establish protocols for emergency response in case of chemical exposure or other emergencies requiring the use of safety showers and
eyewash stations.
  • Train personnel on emergency procedures and the location of safety equipment.
  • Record Keeping
    1. Maintain records of all testing, inspections, maintenance activities, and training related to safety showers and eyewash stations.
    2. Document any deficiencies identified and corrective actions taken.
    3. Archive records for future reference and regulatory inspections.
